Queens, NY - Over 134 families have been helped by dozens of attorneys, activists, translators, and eager volunteers who have been at Terminal 4 in JFK airport 24 hours a day for the last 6 days, since Donald Trump’s un-American Muslim Ban went into effect.
“I have never seen anything like this before,” said Chris Hennessy, the on-the-ground project manager, “To have hundreds of attorneys, working for free, 24 hours a day, for 6 straight days, simply because they understand the need to stand up to the un-American actions of Donald Trump.”
Organizers say that they are able to sustain this around-the-clock, days-long effort thanks in large part to the outpouring of generosity of others, pro-bono commitments from NY law-firms, and efficient coordination by the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) and the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), among others.
Central Diner, for example, has been extremely gracious in feeding the volunteers, and also allowing them to take over the large seating area inside the Terminal 4 Arrivals area. When the group began running into problems with security and airline officials, the Port Authority and JFK management stepped in to make sure they could continue their work.
Assistance has poured in from outside the airport as well, with volunteer groups bringing care packages, helping with rides, and providing support on social media by following @NoBanJFK and using #NoBanJFK and #NoBanUSA to keep the spotlight on the effort.
Despite efforts at damage control from the Trump administration after the troubled rollout of the policy, people traveling from 20 different countries have still been affected and attorneys are still fielding calls and meeting with families in the airport.
